Ted Watson
Composer
An informative and humorous look at music as it was used in Shakespeare's plays, and how it has been used in more recent times. Instruments from the Elizabethan period to the present day are demonstrated. We are introduced to the music of the lutenist Robert Johnson (1583 - 1633) whose original setting of Shakespeare's song 'Where the Bee Sucks' (The Tempest - 1611) is compared to two more recent settings.
Ted Watson's anecdotes give a humorous insight into the life of a musician with this world famous theatre company.
Edward (Ted) Watson won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music to study clarinet and composition. There he won the Eve Kische Memorial prize for woodwind performance. As clarinetist he was with the RSC band for many years and is a tutor of clarinet at the Birmingham Conservatoire.
His orchestral compositions and arrangements have been performed by the Royal Liverpool Orchestra and Choir and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. Ted’s Chamber Music compositions and arrangements have been played by the Nash Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, the Midland Chamber Players and English Serenata who have recorded and broadcast his arrangements and works.
He was featured composer for the Stratford-upon-Avon Festival of English Music.
