Roger Pringle

Honorary Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company

Roger Pringle was Director of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust at Stratford-upon-Avon from 1989. He holds a degree in history from the University of Cambridge, a degree in education from the University of Reading, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Central England. He has lectured widely in Britain and the United States of America on Shakespeare and aspects of the Tudor period in Britain. Amongst his publications are Portrait of a Stratford Year and Elizabeth I, and his edited work includes Images of Shakespeare and Shakespeare and Cultural Traditions. He was for many years the director of the annual Stratford-upon-Avon Poetry Festival, founded in 1954 and sponsored by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. He has published a collection of his own poetry and edited two verse anthologies, Poems of Warwickshire and Poems for Shakespeare. He has devised poetry programmes for some of the UK’s leading arts festivals, which have involved many stars of stage and screen, including Peggy Ashcroft, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, John Gielgud, Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley and Janet Suzman. For ten years he served as Secretary of the International Shakespeare Association, and he is an Honorary Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
